MiniCals is going ahead with the attic workshop on Saturday, May 22, 2021 in Morgan Hill, CA. There are a couple of spaces still available. Deb Laue from The Itty Bitties miniature club will provide instruction online for creating a 1:12 (1″ scale) trellis box with a climbing rose.

This is a 2-session class taking place via Zoom. On Sunday, Nov. 8th, participants will assemble the trellis box and the climbing rose bush. On Dec. 6th, the geraniums and all of the filler flowers will be completed.

All the artwork will be provided with step-by-step instructions on how to make the various flowers.

Cost: $65 plus $5 postage. The class price includes all the supplies needed to make the project, including 5 specialty paper punches and the laser cut planter box. The only tools participants need to supply are scissors, tweezers, and tacky or turbo tacky glue.

If you already have punches that you’d like to use, Deb will adjust the class fee by the cost of any punch you don’t need sent to you. The class uses the following punches: Small – Tri leaf, Hydra cluster and Cedar Sprig; Mini punches – the Daisy and Bell Flower or Cherry Blossom.

Debra Taylor: Miniature Weaving and Dolls

Debra shared the following description of her projects:
“This is weaving fabric on a 4-shaft floor loom that I am using with miniatures. I am using a very fine white silk yarn (60/2) for the warp and commercial (30/2) and my handspun silk yarn for the weft. This is an overshot pattern called ‘Mirrored Minarets’ from A Handweaver’s Pattern Book by Marguerite Davison.”

Several of the pre-convention and registered workshop instructors who were scheduled to teach in Indianapolis will be teaching their workshops online during the week of July 19 (this is the week that would have been the NAME National Convention). There is no event registration fee; just the cost of the workshops.

During the Online Event, Roundtable and Mega Roundtable kits will be available for purchase. More information will be available closer to the July 20th date.

On Saturday, February 22nd, 2020, Karen Laisure led a workshop in Morgan Hill, California. Over twenty miniaturists participated, using wire mesh to create garden baskets and props. After carefully stretching, bending, folding and gluing the props to jewelry findings and wood, the pieces were simply painted and aged with acrylic paints. It was an easy, laid-back day.

Thank you to Rhona Lee for the photos. Some of the pieces in the photos were created by artisans, and were used as inspiration for the class.

Workshop Reminder: Fun with Wire Mesh

Children’s Workshops at 2019 Good Sam Show

The Good Sam Show is offering free workshops for little children, and pre-registered workshops for children ages 9 to 14.

The free children’s workshops will take place Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 12-13, 2019) from noon until 3 pm at the Doubletree Hotel in San Jose.

Come and join Sophia while she teaches you how to assemble and paint a 1:12 birdcage. There will be a 3D printed bird to paint and items to create fun accessories for your bird cage. All materials and tools are included in class. No need to bring anything!

It’s Halloween! Students in Cade Deverell’s class will use paint, glitter, and lots of imagination to decorate the Halloween cart and several mini pumpkins. They will color fall leaves, fill the cart and arrange all for a festive display. Will it be the centerpiece for your miniature Halloween party or will it sit on the porch of your dollhouse to welcome trick-or-treaters?

Children can make a miniature project of their very own at our free Children’s Workshops Saturday and Sunday from Noon until 3 pm. They can try building, landscaping, or soar with their imagination before going over to the Children’s Sales Table where we have priced miniature items for a child’s budget.

Tools and Techniques
Sunday, October 13th from 9:30 am to 10:50 am there will be a FREE “Tools and Techniques” seminar for all. It is held at the show venue and will cover a number of power and hand tools, as well as information on roofing, flooring, wall treatments, basic landscaping, and other aspects of making miniatures.

Dealer Donation Drawings
Dealers donate items to a special Dealer Donation Drawing. Tickets may be purchased at the show and winners will be drawn Sunday at 3:15pm. You do not need to be present to win.

On Saturday, April 13th, 2019, MiniCals club hosted an adorable potting bench vignette with everything needed to complete the project. Jasmin Schwarz (Bitty Bits and Bobs) will be demonstrating a variety of techniques for polymer clay with a lemon flavor, including the method for building a lemon cane. For us novices, that is the long tube of lemon that looks like lemon slices when thinly sliced. Students may choose a variety of lemon treats to make for their own Summertime vignette. $35

The miniature community helps friends affected by the Camp Fire

We’ll remember the images on TV— traffic jams of blackened, steel boxes—remnants of cars that were left behind just moments before being consumed by the fire. We’ll remember the stories of people leaving everything—their homes, businesses, pets—to escape with their lives; and hoping that their loved ones were safe. As shocking as these images and stories were, the personal impact wasn’t felt until I received an email from one of the members of “Our Little Mini Club” in Paradise, California: “Hi. We have lost our home from the fire! All area mostly RED… 6 of us have Lost Our Homes!”

Along with many others, I felt powerless to help our mini friends. But as a community, we could make a difference.

There are 2 words in the NAME mission statement that I believe apply to more than just our experience with miniatures. These two words are, “through sharing.” It is, without a doubt, how we were able to help our friends —through the sharing of time, donations, and talents.

While the fires burned on, miniaturists in the N-2 region (Northern CA and Northern NV) were exchanging emails and phone calls. The miniature community rallied together to collect gift cards, personal notes, etc. The Sacramento and San Jose clubs organized mini play days. Benicia area miniaturists took part in a workshop taught and donated by Carol Kubrican. The Reno, Nevada area miniaturists collected gift cards for the Paradise club members.

Barbara Thornton-Hill worked quickly to accept donations from generous mini friends and family. All the while, she coordinated contact with area club members and Paradise club members.

The Mini Cyber Club held a benefit auction during their holiday party to raise money for the miniaturists.

Carol Kubrican created the “Friendship Hutch Kit” with proceeds donated to the Paradise club members. To help keep the cost of the kit supplies low, the kits included donated/discounted materials from GCLaser, Evan Designs, and Handley House. Concerned miniaturists purchased the kits from as far away as Australia, England, and New Zealand.

Through the sharing of our time, donations and talents, the miniature community was able to collect over $15,000.

The funds are being dispersed directly to the members of “Our Little Mini Club” in Paradise, California who have lost their homes. A sincere thank you to everyone who donated!

This message was received from one of the club members who lost her home:

“Thank you all for your kindness. I can’t begin to tell how much this means to us. This is the second time that I have lost everything. My home went down in the Humboldt fire. We are all looking forward to someday returning to our favorite hobby. Hugs.” — J.S.

Club members are hoping to meet at the end of January.

Pie Pickup Workshop with Carol Kubrican

1/4 Scale Pie Pickup Workshop – Feb. 2, 2019

Join in on the fun and create your own pie pickup! Participants will paint a 3D printed truck and stools, work with decals and fabric, and learn some helpful tricks for finishing. All of the accessories shown are included. You may pre-order the kit to create and landscape the base for an additional $8. There will be some painting pre-work. This will be shipped to you at the beginning of January, so that you’ll have a whole month to prepare for our day of fun. The plan is to finish the pie pickups in the workshop, or come very close to it!

Cost $145 (includes lunch, shipping and misc. supplies). The optional base kit is $8. Your space will be reserved after payment has been received (PayPal, personal checks, and money orders).

The Good Sam Show is offering free workshops for little children, and pre-registered workshops for children over the age of eight.

The free children’s workshops will take place Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 13-14, 2018) from noon until 3 pm at the Doubletree Hotel in San Jose.

This is the last week to sign up for MiniCals and Through the Looking Glass’s NAME Day. Kit orders must be turned in on September 1, 2018. Smaller scale kits are available if you would like to join MiniCals and work on a 1/4 or 1/2 scale kit. Please contact Ruth before Saturday, Sept. 1.

In the past several months, we have lost some very special miniaturists who had a special place in their hearts for NAME.

To honor the lives and dedication of our departed NAME friends, Luci Hanson will be hosting two live seminars online for a minimum donation to NAME of $5.00 per attendee. The proceeds will go to NAME in memory of Eve Karobolis, Phyllis Tucker and Terry Reasor.

On January 27, True2Scale hosted a 1″ scale Succulents and Accessories Workshop in Petaluma, CA. Participants made container gardens with tiny succulents. The next workshop will take place in June, and focus on the Succulent Potting Bench.

Feb. and March Pocket Party Classes at DT&M

Dollhouses, Trains & More will host a 2-part class for February and March 2018. Create the tea space you’ve always dreamed about — or maybe that tea room of your wildest imagination. It’s your choice. Bring: scissors, tweezers, patience and magnification glasses if needed. Please bring items that you would like to place on the exterior and interior walls of the building structure and/or landscaping features you would like to include.

The 2018 Pocket Party Classes are scheduled for the 3rd Saturday of the month through November.

On January 24, Dollhouses, Trains and More shop in Novato, CA, hosted their first in the 2018 series of Pocket Party Classes. Participants created scenes on re-purposed railroad cars.

Karen decided to have a party.

Aimee showed her new love of baseball.

Donita decide to go out and play.

Shirleigh’s love of music came to life in her Graveyard Jug Band.

Maria got back to work.

Dollhouses, Trains and More will be hosting classes in February and March under the direction of Maria, the Mini Dept. Manager. The theme will be “tea.” For more info, visit the DT&M blog.

True2Scale 1″ Succulents Workshop

1″ Scale Succulents and Garden Decor Workshop
Jan. 27, 2018; 10am – 2pm
The Creamery, Petaluma, CA

Participants will learn faux painting and image transfer techniques to create succulents in old, re-purposed pots and pans. Students will make realistic looking succulents; weather wood; transfer artwork; create “china”, “aluminum”, and “graniteware”; and work with paper to make a 3D garden star.All of the accessories shown are included (the potting bench structure is not included). Items to be created in the workshop: wood crate with succulents, cooking pot with succulent garden, small pan with succulent garden, coffee pot with succulents, tea kettle with succulents, muffin tin with succulents, canisters, garden gloves, “mini” teacup house, “china” dishes, pot with soil and scoop, 3D hanging star.

Cost $65 (includes lunch). Your space will be reserved after payment has been received. We accept PayPal, personal checks, and money orders. If you register and will be unable to attend the workshop, a workshop kit will be mailed to you.
